I am a little late with this blog, but I wanted to tell you all about my road trip out East this past fall.
I had so much fun! I went swimming in the ocean, well not quite swimming, but I chased the waves, I dug up shells to play with, and I met a new friend, an English Bulldog, and boy was she tough! We went on a long hike around the island and climbed over many big rocks. Truthfully, I did have to be carried part of the way, as my paws got sore from the sea salt and rocks, but not my friend, she was resilient and she climbed those rocks with ease! I have been told she was also "well behaved" as she stayed with her family while we hiked along. Whereas I, sometimes "pretended" I could not hear especially, when I found rotting stuff to roll in that had washed up in the seaweed; the smellier the better! I would roll and roll, then look to see how far everyone else had walked along, then I would roll and roll and roll some more. You would think that everyone would be glad when my hearing came back and I came running but, they didn't appreciate my new "eau de parfum"! In fact, I was given a bath when we got back and I was not happy! The whole vacation, this tough, athletic Bulldog didn't really want to play with me. I know I annoyed her, just a bit, but she always looked grumpy and I never knew why. Then it hit me! A lot is in a name, so when I finally tell you the name of my friend, you will understand too... I am named Alfie, short for "Alfred the Great"! She is named "Cuppy ", short for "Cupcake "! Yep, enough said!

Hi! My name is Brandi! Sometimes, my name is also Trouble or Chicken, it depends on the day. I am 4 years old and my birthday is coming up on June 7th, just in case you would like to, you know, get me a present or something!
I'm usually a pretty good girl, if I am being worked. I like to go out on trails instead of riding around in an arena as there are more things to spook at. The bigger the spook, the more excited my mom gets. I like to think that I'm just making her a better rider! My mom brought me to school with her and I learned lots of new things! I have to admit, when we first started working together, I didn't like her and I tried to kick her and run her over. I learned pretty quickly though, that that wasn't allowed. We did a lot of work together, especially on the ground, walking over a blue flappy thing which I'm sure tried to kill me about 90% of the time! My favorite part of our training together was when she said "Whoa”! That became my favorite sound and I learned that if I kept going after she said it, she'd say it even more! Once we started riding, my mom would take me out on trail rides. That is how I found my love of the trails, particularly in the winter time, as the snow hides the monsters. I love when we finish a ride together because my mom gives me lots of treats and massages! When I'm not being worked, I like to forget my manners and kick out at people. I'm really good at being a bit naughty and getting into things I shouldn't - it's my specialty. 2019 is going to be an interesting year, I can feel it. I just know that my mom is going to make me do something big… I am Avie, a female Ragdoll, and this is the story of how I came to live in my forever home twelve years ago.
My mother was a pregnant breeding cat who had developed problems delivering her last litter of kittens. Her owners were worried that there might be problems again, especially when an x-ray showed that I was the only kitten and I was a big girl! Dr. DeCaire offered to monitor my mother during her delivery in case she had problems or needed a Caesarian. Since it was Christmas holidays, my mother went home with Dr. DeCaire. I was born Christmas Eve with no problems at all. My mother and I went back to the breeders, but when I was 8 weeks old, my owners gave me as a gift to Dr. DeCaire. So except for a few weeks while I was nursing, I was born and have lived my whole life in the same house. Now I share MY house with my Ragdoll adopted brother and two bothersome dogs. It is a full time job keeping them all in line. I always have to remind them that I was here first so that makes me the boss. Hi everyone! My name is Eli! My mom adopted me from the OSPCA. At that time, I had ongoing eye problems and underwent a number of eye tests. It was determined that I had Mycoplasma and I underwent treatment for it. I personally have no idea what Mycoplasma is but what I do know, is that they gave me medicine and my eyes improved. My eyes are not perfect, and probably never will be, but at least I am comfortable and have a great family who cares for me and gives me special eye drops when I need them. All in all, I can’t complain about my life.
I have 2 dog “brothers”. My brother Edward is okay and we tend to get along well. He even lets me steal his bed from time to time. My brother Gideon, on the other hand, seems to think that chasing me is fun. Sometimes I let him, sometimes I don’t! I loooooovvvveeee food and I complain an awful lot if I don’t get fed on time according to my clock. My days are spent finding the warmest place to sleep; I especially like the heating vent but my mom’s lap works well too! Well, I have got to go for now, it is time to bug the dog! Hi! My name is Wally and I am a purebred Labrador Retriever! I seem to get extra attention because of my unique color; my mom says I am called a “silver lab”. I always enjoy the extra attention but, I literally get so excited when saying hello, I contort myself in half. This is how I got the nickname of “wiggle bum”!
I love fetching things for my owners. I carry my toys around everywhere and I like to show them off! I am looking forward to the upcoming hunting season and putting my skills to the test. I am an animal lover! I have my own pet chickens! We all enjoy playing together in the yard! My mom sometimes worries when we play together but, I am very gentle and the chickens come over to greet me! I also live with my best friend in the whole world - his name is Carl. Carl is the newest addition to our family and he is a Bengal cat; however, Carl doesn’t seem to know that he is a cat yet! Carl and I love each other and play non-stop but please don't tell that to the other dogs in Muskoka, as I don't want them to know that I am a softy when it comes to cats! Thank you for reading my blog and I look forward to meeting you all! Hi, I am Susan! My family also calls me Zelda or Suz. I came to live with my family, which also includes 2 cats and a dog, 3 years ago. I enjoy being with my family and I am very social but, don’t touch me! I don’t mean to be unfriendly, but when you touch me it messes up my fur and upsets me.
I am not a big sleeper and if people are up, then I am up. Life is too short to spend it sleeping. I am addicted to light up disco balls and as long a one is running, I will play all night long. I am very talkative and have a wide array of sounds I like to make. Purring is not one of those sounds though, it shows weakness in my eyes. My favorite pastime is playing fetch. I like to play fetch with a wide range of toys ranging from a small toy elephant to a tennis ball to any socks that are left out. I collect the toys and let all of my family members know by caterwauling and carrying them around the house with them in my mouth. I like to let everyone know what nice things I have! Sorry I can’t talk longer…the disco ball just started up! Gotta run… Well hello there! My name is Anderson and I am a 7 year old, shaded silver tabby, Persian. It took a while for my family to come up with my name as nothing seemed to fit. Then, it clicked one day! I have beautiful silver hair, I talk a lot, I have star quality and, when I moved into the house, I fell in love with and became the shadow of a dog named Cooper. I then became the Anderson to my buddy Cooper!
I really enjoy water! Yes, that is right I enjoy water. As soon as a sink or bath tub is drained, I rush to lie in the water that remains. I have even jumped into a full bathtub for a swim a few times! This does not, however, fit with my beautiful long hair or my hatred of grooming. To me, being brushed is a cruel and usual treatment of a cat. Even if I don’t have any matts, when I am being brushed, I scream like I am being tortured. Whoever invented pet grooming is plain just mean! Then you add my love of water to the equation, which just serves to matt my coat further, and we have a bad situation! I am a quirky cat, I get up really close to the faces of others, so my nose is almost touching theirs, and yowl at them. This serves to upset the other cats in the household so I am a bit of an outcast with them; well, except Desmond who loves everyone. I am just trying to communicate something important but I am totally misunderstood. The dog and I get along great though and I love to snuggle up close with him! The human family members in the household love that I am chatty and frequently answer me back! I sharpen my paws on everything but my favorite thing is a plastic laundry basket. In the middle of the night, when it is quiet and dark, sharpening my paws on a laundry basket creates a symphony to my ears! My family may not think so but I don’t really care. I am also renowned to be a thief of seats and beds. If someone is sitting in a chair or lying in a bed that I want, I lurk quietly unnoticed and as soon as they get up, I sneak my way in. It is the only way to get the best spot in the house! It is also the only way I know to get to sleep on the bed sheets with my head on the pillow. I am not sure how I am expected to sleep without a pillow! I make the best happy feet! I am unusual in the fact that I make happy feet with my back paws as well as my front paws. I make happy feet anywhere including on other pets in the household and on my people. If I snuggle up on the couch beside you, don’t be surprised if I make happy feet on your legs or your arms. I will also wrap my paws around you so you have to stay with me. I love to snuggle with those I love! I like to play with toy springs. I race around the house with them and slide around corners on my very furry feet. Occasionally, I run into the walls because once I start sliding I simply can’t stop! I also love helping people to read or to colour in a book. I feel like it is a bonding opportunity to just relax, spend time together and for me to lie on the paper. Hey, does anyone feel like reading? Paws and Claws Staff Pet Blog - "What's It All About Alfie?"
Hi, I'm Alfie! I am a Schipperke; a breed originally from Belgium. Schipperkes are also known as "little black devil" dogs and I feel that I am doing my part to live up to that name! I am curious about EVERYTHING and have LOTS of energy! Here is a picture of me graduating from beginner agility class at Ruff Haus. The class was fun but sometimes (most times), I just wanted to play with my fellow classmate Dallas, the Great Dane . Yes, he is bigger, well a LOT bigger than me but he is my buddy; my "brother from another mother (and father!)". Anyways, I'm just over a year old now and for my next agility class, I am going to show them that I CAN focus, that I will NOT be distracted, that I w........what........SQUIRREL!!! Shhhh! You can’t see me, but I can see you! Aren’t I clever, finding yet another super secret hiding place without any help?! It is no wonder why, when I was a little kitten, that my family named me Mischief.
I am a happy and active indoor cat. Although I love everyone in my family, my favourite person is the young, female human in my house. I wait every morning, outside her bedroom door, meowing to be let in. She is the only person who can carry me around and who I allow to cuddle with me. I even like to sleep under her covers, but only hers no one elses; I wish my family would let me stay with her all day and all night. Night time is best! There is a little rodent, in a cage, in her room and during the night I can watch it ever so closely. I have a kitty brother that I chase and wrestle with and a new doggy brother that I pretend to hate. In reality, I like to tease him and will even bite his ears. Haha! He is even a little scared of me, which I like even more. My other favourite things are taking naps in the sunshine, watching the birds at the feeders, and hiding when strange people come to the house. Once, when my family was away for a week, I hid so well that the people who were supposed to look after me had to turn the entire house upside down to be sure that I was okay. Haha! My hiding spot was a guitar case that time. That was a good one! Hello everyone! My life sure has been a crazy one! I came to live with my mom when one of Centennial Animal Hospital’s clients, who happened to be a breeder of Yorkshire Terriers, had her last litter of puppies. She knew it was my mom’s dream to have a Yorkshire terrier; I mean who wouldn’t want one?! When I first went home with my mom, I fit in very well with her herd of cats. Not only was I the same size as the cats but I acted basically the same. So, I figured, either I am a cat or my mom’s cats are dogs!
Our life changed when my dad came around. We moved to a new house and my Dad had this CRAZY springer spaniel that I learned to love; he was an acquired taste! My life changed again, when my mom brought home a tiny human who made so much noise. I don’t think anyone has slept well since! To my delight, we moved again but into a house in town this time. This was a perfect fit for me as country living was not my thing! At first, I thought we had moved into a quiet subdivision in town. That was until we met the neighbours. It appears that they all have those tiny, loud and very active humans as well!! Life is always changing at our house. My mom pet sits other people’s animals so there are always new dogs and cats coming and going from our house. I usually don’t play with the dogs because they are too much for me; I much prefer the cats and kittens that my mom fosters. The best part about having different animals in our house is that I always get to meet their humans. Being as small as I am, I get lots of attention! One of my favorite spots is on the back of the couch watching the world go by. I prefer my mom’s lap, but who am I kidding, anyone’s lap will do. I have learned to love this crazy life! I am still a bit nervous of tiny humans but when they are quiet, I even find that they can be quite snuggly. |
